If you are new to online business you might be wondering why you would need or even want an email list. I know I felt that way when I started. The idea of becoming a spammy email marketer seemed totally against what I wanted to do. It does require a mindset shift. I had to realize that my audience actually wanted to hear from me and liked getting the help that I sent. 

What is an email list?

An email list is simply a list of people who have provided you with their email address. It is the people you given you permission to send emails to. For information on getting started with an email list see this article

It gives you someone to sell to

I’m assuming that you are in the health coaching business because you want to help people. Having an email list gives you a list of people that might want your help. They might not want your help right now, but they might want it in the future.

You can also survey your email for ideas. If you are not sure of what product to be creating, ask your email list what they are struggling with.

Social media can change

Many business owners feel that email is passé and social media is where it’s at for communicating with your audience. But social media can and does change. A few years ago Facebook made algorithm changes that made it much harder to get visibility on your Facebook page and they have recently started removing posts that are health related from Facebook groups. 

Easier to reach people

I mentioned the issue with visibility. This has become a big problem with trying to reach your audience on social media. Often posts made on Facebook pages, in groups and on Instagram are only seen by a small percentage of your audience. But if you send an email, there is a much better chance that it will be delivered to their inbox. And if your emails are informative and engaging then your audience will be likely to open them. 

So the next time someone complains about their email open rate, ask them to check their analytics on Instagram.

You own your list

People have seen their Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest accounts shut down for what seems like no reason. You don’t own your social media accounts, but you do own your email list.

Better Return On Investment

If you are looking for places to invest your time and money, then an email list should be at the top of the list. Studies have shown that businesses get a better return on the investment of an email list than any other platform.

More people use email than social media

Do you know anyone that doesn’t use social media? Probably. Do you know anyone who doesn’t have an email address? I doubt it. And most people check their email everyday.

The older your ideal audience is, the less likely they are on social media. So if your audience is older then it is especially important that you have an email list.

Your list can help you come up with ideas

I recently wanted to know what to create for a quick program so I asked my list what they thought was the missing element to their weight loss. I was quickly able to come up with and idea for a new program. 

You can also use your list to decide what content to create. What emails got the best open rates, the most clicks? This is likely content that is resonating with your audience
