Is your brand a mess of different fonts, different colours and stock photos is different styles? Or do you have a coherent brand, but every time you need to create a new document or social media post, you need to find the right colours or fonts?

You might want to create a brand board.

This article will explain the technical aspects of creating a brand board, not the way to choose the correct colours and fonts for your brand. You can find ways to help you choose your branding elements here.

What is a brand board

A brand board is a document that contains all the visuals aspects of your company brand in one place. It can contain things like the fonts you use, colour palette, logos and any visual textures you use.

Why you need a brand board

A brand board has several purposes:

  • It allows you to have a cohesive style because the elements are in one place and can be seen together.
  • A brand board makes it easy to retrieve the information when you need it, so the new button you create will have the correct colour.
  • And most importantly it allows you to communicate your branding requirements with contractors, designers and team members.

How to create a brand board

Using Canva

Start with creating a brand mood board using one of the templates available in Canva. Once you have come up with something you are happy with then make sure you add these to your brand kit. In order to create Canva’s brand kits you need a paid account, but you can also do this with their 30 day free trial and it will stay with your account.

If you use a different graphics tool then you'll find options in it to create your brand board.

To create a brand mood board with Canva click on Create a Design, then type or select Mood board photo collage. Scroll through the templates and pick one. You can then change the colours, fonts and photos to match your brand. Or use these as inspiration to create a brand for your business.

Here is an example of a mood board I created using Canva:

To add brand elements to Canva, go to your home page. Click on add a brand kit, and then create a brand kit. In this you’ll be able to add your brand colours and fonts to Canva. With the pro version you are able to create multiple brand kits if you like. Your brand elements will be available for you to use in your designs.

Here is how it looks when you create your brand kit on Canva:

Using Trello

If you use Trello to keep track of everything in your business and to share stuff with team members and others then you can store your brand stuff there. I recommend creating a list that is part of your main business board. You can then create separate cards with copies of branding information.

This might include brand colours. When you enter a hex colour code into Trello, it adds a little square of that colour so you know what it is.

For fonts you can store links to the fonts you use for easy access. And keeping an image or pdfs of each font is also helpful.

Logos, backgrounds and other images can also be stored in Trello.

Use a different project management platform

If you are communicating with team members or keeping track of your own projects using a different project management system, then keeping your brand information here for easy reference is a good idea.

What Tech Do You Need?

To start and grow your wellness business

Using a Google doc/ folder

You can use a Google doc to enter all of your branding information. This makes it easy to share. Keep copies of images and ideas in the same folder.

Or use your favourite document platform

If you use Microsoft Word or Apple Pages you can easily create a document that contains your brand information. Make sure you store this in an easy to find place.

You'll also want to save it as a pdf and keep it somewhere where it is assessable by others.

Summary

A brand board is one of the most useful pieces of information you can have for your wellness business. Creating a digital version of your brand board will make sure it is easy to access and to share with others.
